Sorry, wrong number: St. Catharines man tries to sell woman her stolen cellphone

Trying to sell a woman her own stolen cellphone proved costly for a St. Catharines man.

Jhon Flores appeared Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines Wednesday and pleaded guilty to several charges including carrying a concealed weapon.

On Jan. 10, court was told, the 24-year-old defendant made arrangements to sell a cellphone to a woman on Page Street in St. Catharines.

The woman immediately recognized the cellphone as the one which had been stolen from her during a robbery a month earlier.

Flores was later arrested without incident and found to be in possession of a black revolver-style pellet gun.

He was also carrying a quantity of cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. The drug charges were withdrawn Wednesday.

Flores had been banned from having any weapons in his possession following a firearms-related conviction in 2017.

Judge Cameron Watson imposed a sentence of time served and a 10-year weapons ban.

Earlier this week, Flores pleaded guilty to charges relating to the original theft of the woman's phone. In that case, he was sentenced to five months and 20 days behind bars and placed on probation for one year.
