Influx of tourists to Niagara Falls over long weekend raises eyebrows
A stay-at-home order and most businesses being closed did not stop large numbers of tourists from visiting Niagara Falls this past long weekend.
Photos were posted to social media apparently showing crowds of people gathering in the heart of the city’s tourist district, enjoying the sights during Family Day and Valentine’s Day while the region remained in lockdown.
Except for hotels, which are deemed essential and have remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic, other attractions were not open, while a tourism agency promoting the destination had halted all advertising efforts.
While no variant of the virus has been confirmed in Niagara, the region’s acting medical officer of health said it might only be a matter of time before it is, “given the travel that occurs within the GTA down to Niagara.”
